Maternal Child Services at MVHS offers several educational classes and support services for new mothers, including breastfeeding and childbirth.
Mohawk Valley Health System offers FREE monthly breastfeeding classes for expectant parents who have chosen or are considering breastfeeding and bimonthly parents support group known as breastfeeding cafe.
MVHS employs three International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and several Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC’s) RN’s to help expectant and new moms feel comfortable with breastfeeding. All staff in Maternal Child Services are also trained to help support moms with lactation needs and questions. Moms should expect on-going support during their hospital stay.
The classes, taught by our IBCLC and CLC’s, will cover topics including:
- Normal newborn behavior
- What to expect in the first few days
- Physiology of milk production
- Positioning and latch for optimal comfort
- Finding support after discharge
- Returning to work
- Obtaining insurance covered breast pump.
Common breastfeeding concerns will be addressed and resource information will be available.
Fathers are encouraged to attend!
Classes are held in Allen Calder Conference Room 1 and 2.
The Breastfeeding Cafe is a meeting space for pregnant and breastfeeding moms to support one another, socialize and get breastfeeding clinical support if needed. Refreshments are served and a baby weigh station is available. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of the month from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m on the Faxton Campus in the CenteringPregnancy Room.
