Message from the Program Director

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the MVHS Transitional Year Residency Program! We are excited to welcome another class of residents this year. Our mission is to educate future physicians in evidence-based, accessible, high quality, compassionate care and to prepare them for their future specialty training.

The sponsoring program for Transitional Year is our General Surgery residency program with resident experiences also in Emergency Medicine, Inpatient Medicine, Ambulatory Clinics, ICU, and Elective opportunities across a variety of specialties.

Our sponsoring institution, the Wynn Hospital, is part of the Mohawk Valley Health System network, which is one of the largest healthcare systems in Central New York.  Having resettled almost 17,000 refugees, Utica offers residents the opportunity to care for patients from all over the world with a wide array of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and medical conditions.

Our Transitional Year residents will become integral members of our residency teams within MVHS, and as such, enjoy the same privileges and responsibilities as all categorical residents.  MVHS has established residencies in Family Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry, Podiatry, Dental, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pharmacy.

We look forward to discussing our program with you in more detail.

Sincerely,

Afsar Khan, M.D.
