Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is proud to announce that it is now offering Amma by Cooler Heads, a groundbreaking, FDA-cleared device designed to alleviate one of the most emotionally distressing side effects of chemotherapy: hair loss. Developed by a San Diego-based company founded by a cancer survivor who underwent chemotherapy, Amma offers a compassionate solution to chemotherapy-induced alopecia.
Chemotherapy-induced alopecia can deeply affect the self-esteem and emotional well-being of cancer patients. Recognizing this, Amma by Cooler Heads provides an innovative way to protect patients’ hair, giving them a sense of control and privacy during a vulnerable time. This portable, easy to use scalp cooling device works by reducing blood flow to hair follicles, minimizing exposure to chemotherapy drugs and thus reducing the risk of hair loss.
“Acquiring Amma by Cooler Heads is an important step forward in our commitment to delivering compassionate, holistic cancer care,” said Alicia M. DeTraglia, MD. “We understand that hair loss isn’t just a cosmetic concern, it can profoundly impact a patient’s identity and sense of self. By offering this technology, we’re helping to alleviate one of the most personal hardships our patients face during their treatment.”
In addition, Amma aligns with the evolving reimbursement landscape for scalp cooling. The American Medical Association (AMA) has issued new Category I CPT® codes for mechanical scalp cooling, which became effective January 1, 2026. This milestone signifies a positive move toward broader coverage and accessibility for both healthcare systems and patients.
“We are deeply honored to partner with MVHS in offering Amma to their patients,” said CEO and Founder Kate Dilligan. “Our commitment to making scalp cooling easier and more accessible for everyone is what drives us. This partnership allows us to bring that vision to life for more patients who want to maintain their privacy, agency, and identity as they go through treatment.
