The Thoracic Surgery Program at MVHS is now offering a state-of-the-art procedure to better detect and biopsy lung nodules earlier than typical procedures. The Ion robotic-assisted lung biopsy system is used by your doctor to guide a thin, flexible scope through the complex twists and turns of your airways.

The Ion system uses a CT scan to create a detailed, GPS-like map of your lungs, providing your doctor with real-time, turn-by-turn directions to reach any lung nodules that were detected. This is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to reach multiple lung nodules through your airways and collect small tissue samples without any incisions or punctures to the lung. These samples are then sent to a lab to determine if they contain cancer cells. If cancer is found, staging can be performed with standard tools during the same procedure to determine if it has spread.
