Diabetes clinic: The MVHS Diabetes Clinic currently holds 3 full days a week. Utica being a home for refugee population, fellow will expose to racial, cultural and socio-economic diverse population. The fellow will be provided clinical services to both adult and pediatric patients with different type of diabetes including but not limited to Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, atypical diabetes. The fellow will manage different diabetes technologies including but not limited to, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) device, insulin pump.

Inpatient rotation: Fellow will work with diabetes/endocrine consult team in the hospital at least 8-10 weeks over one year training. Typical endocrine consult week starts on Saturday until next Saturday. Fellow will take care of patients with different diabetes types as well as hyperglycemia from stress, tube feeding or drug. The patient will occasionally works with virtual glucose management service providing to hospitalized patients with abnormal blood glucose. 

Endocrinology/Diabetes Education: Fellow will spend half day a week at local endocrinology clinics and diabetes education program except when patient is on hospital consult rotation.

 

Elective: The fellow will have opportunity to use their elective time in different clinic related to diabetes complication management such as wound clinic, podiatry, OB clinic, ophthalmology, cardiology or nephrology.

 

Primary care clinic: To maintain exposure to primary care, the follow are required to work one full day a week unless the patient is on away rotation or hospital rotation to provide primary care to patients at SRVFMC in order to keep up with board requirement.

Diabetes Camp: The fellow must spend one week regional ADA diabetes camp to get more exposure to different diabetes technologies.

Didactics: In addition to diabetes lecture by faculty and guest lectures, the fellow will be given self-directed learning module to be completed on different diabetes topics, landmark trials, and latest research articles. There will be special diabetes didactics time weekly which will be used for diabetes lectures and to discuss self-directed learning modules. Scholarly Activity – The fellow is required to complete at least one scholarly activity: either poster presentation or publication. The fellow will have to submit the type of research topic in the first 3 months of fellowship. The fellow can join an existing research project or start their own project; however, it is expected to be completed before the end of fellowship training. After approval from the program director, the fellow will work with the MVHS Research Department to get appropriate approvals, including IRB approval, before initiating the research project. To complete the scholarly activity requirement, the research result has to be presented in poster presentation at a regional or national conference or accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
