UTICA, N.Y. – Afsar Khan, MD, has been named program director for the new Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Transitional Year Residency Program at the Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS). The program was approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for 12 residency positions and will participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Training will begin in July of 2023.

A transitional year program provides global training for physician learners before they enter a more specialized residency track, and is required for many residency programs.

The sponsoring program for Transitional Year is the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare General Surgery Residency Program at MVHS, which offers resident experiences in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Inpatient Medicine, Ambulatory Clinics, Intensive Care Unit and elective opportunities across a variety of specialties.

“We are ready for a robust first year for this program that will allow residents to try their hand at several different specialties,” said program director Afsar Khan, MD. “We have a lot to offer with the Wynn Hospital opening this fall. Becoming a teaching hospital is a priority toward recruiting and retaining doctors in our area.”

Dr. Khan was awarded the 2020 Northeast Group Medical Director of the Year for his role in leading the MVHS Emergency Department.

MVHS has established residencies in Family Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry, Podiatry, Transitional Year, Dental and Pharmacy, with the current total of residents at 45. MVHS is also applying for residencies in Emergency Medicine and OB/GYN.
