UTICA, N.Y. – The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) and NAACP Rome Chapter will host a forum on Understanding the Maternal Mortality Crisis in Minority Communities at the Wynn Hospital Auditorium, 111 Hospital Drive in Utica. All are welcome to attend.

The forum will begin with a viewing of Aftershock, a documentary film which focuses on two minority families impacted by the death of women during and after childbirth. This documentary first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Doc Competition, and was awarded the Special Jury Award: Impact for Change.

Rose Antilus, MD, Medical Director of OB/GYN Services for MVHS, will lead a discussion following the film about strengthening prenatal and maternal care in our community. Maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are significantly higher than other developed countries, and black birthing people face three to four times the mortality risk compared to their white counterparts, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The event will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 5 p.m. at the Wynn Hospital Auditorium, 111 Hospital Drive, Utica. Valet parking is available. To register for this event, please visit https://bit.ly/3Up6gEp.
