The Central New York (CNY) Diabetes Program has a Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN) – a registered nurse who specializes in the care of routine foot care problems and is board certified through the Wound Ostomy Certification Nursing Board.

The Foot Care Nurse will take a brief history including:

  • Diabetes management
  • Foot health history
  • Current medications

The Foot Care Nurse will thoroughly examine feet, documenting

  • Foot structure
  • Foot health and circulation,
  • Sensitivity (monofilament and/or vibratory testing)
  • and examine shoes to ensure they are appropriate and safe.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Trimming nails
  • Filing nails
  • Reducing thick nails, if needed
  • Callouses and corns reduced or removed
  • Education regarding proper skin and foot care.

The nurse may make recommendations for the patient to visit their medical doctor if problems are discovered during the brief history and physical examination.

Patients with diabetes can seek foot care at CNY Diabetes through a provider referral.

In addition to these services, CNY Diabetes also has reasonably priced shoes and socks for sale through Dr. Comfort, specifically designed for diabetes patients. Fitting, sizing and custom inserts are also available. Sizes include 4-15 with wide and extra wide and double depth is also available in some styles.
