Utica, NY – Business owners and developers came out today in support of the Mohawk Valley Health System’s (MVHS) new, regional healthcare campus in Downtown Utica. Business community leaders shared their reasons for supporting the project and described the benefits the project will bring to the community.
“This show of support by these business owners and developers further demonstrates what this project will mean not only to healthcare in the region, but also to the business community,” said Scott H. Perra, FACHE, president/CEO for MVHS. “We believe that the new hospital will serve as a catalyst for economic development and attract an active presence of community members and visitors. I want to thank the business owners and developers for speaking out about the positive changes this project will bring to the area.”
“We cannot wait to witness and participate in all the positive that is sure to come from this growth and change,” said Gina Surace, co-owner of GSCB Inc. and 600 State Street. “We hope that by lending our positive voice and encouragement, others will also speak publicly about their support of the project.”
“We believe that this new, state-of-the-art healthcare facility will be a catalyst for the revitalization of our downtown,” said Rakesh Patel, vice president of performance, Visions Hotels, LLC. “We want Utica to be on the map for healthcare, and we want the citizens of Utica to be able to stay right here for procedures and specialists instead of needing to leave for Syracuse or Rochester. So we stand behind the City of Utica, MVHS, and the decision to build Downtown.”
“We are truly excited to be a part of the revitalization of downtown Utica,” said Chelsea Grillo, GSCB Inc. co-owner. “And we're looking forward to the advancements in healthcare that this new, state-of-the-art facility will help to bring to our region.”
“This project represents an incredible accomplishment for the City of Utica and the region,” said Eric Smithers, Bowers Development Group, which is currently engaged in several Utica projects, including the redevelopment of the New Century Club building, 253 Genesee Street. “As out-of-town investors in Downtown Utica, we see the transformative potential and look forward to this success coming to fruition.”
There were more than 20 business owners and developers in attendance Thursday, with those unable to attend sharing messages of support.

“As developers like myself invest in the existing buildings in Downtown Utica, it is also important that new catalyst projects, like the new hospital, occur to help accelerate the redevelopment of the area and to modernize and upgrade community facilities,” said Jeff Foster, one of the partners in the Doyle Hardware mixed-use redevelopment.
“Our organization believes this project is transformational for our community and our region,” said Meghan McGrogan, Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce executive director. “We have been seeing a ton of investment and positive growth in our city. This project will continue this rennaisance for years to come.”
MVHS received approval of the Certificate of Need (CON) application for the construction of the new healthcare campus from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Public Health and Health Planning Council on Thursday, April 12, 2018. The approval allows MVHS to continue to move forward with the project which includes finalizing the design of the new facility, completing the New York State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) process and completing property acquisition. It is expected these next steps will be completed by the end of 2018.
