Preliminary Year

We offer 3 PGY-1 Preliminary general surgery residency positions for residents looking to match into a PGY-2 program such as radiology, anesthesia, dermatology, or those working towards a future categorical position. The Preliminary program gives one year of general surgery training split between Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Residents will be exposed to area such as bariatric, colorectal, abdominal, breast and minimally invasive procedures. They will also participate in both operative and non-operative trauma cases.

Each Preliminary resident is mentored by Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, our Program Director, to ensure that they meet the appropriate educational requirements for their PGY-2 position.

Didactics

Didactics for the Preliminary program will be the same conferences, seminars, journal clubs, M&Ms and multidisciplinary sessions as the Categorical program.

Scholarly Activity

Preliminary residents will not be required to participate in any scholarly activity during their 12 months at Faxton-St. Lukes, but are welcome to participate in quality projects and case presentations if they choose.
